What is God Punishing me for?

The first thought that I had and the first thought that many people have, shortly after the death of a child is "what did I do", "what sin did I not confess that God would want to punish me by taking away my child", "what is God punishing me for"?  You must realize that there is a difference between punishment and chastisement.  Jesus Christ died on the cross to forgive us of all our sins and if we accept Him as our savior, He promises to remember our sins no more. 

God will however use circumstances in our lives to chasten us or discipline us to get us to be what he wants us to be.  

This is a very difficult principle for us to understand.
